Piranha CL+ is a 2-gene Clearfield variety released in 2021 by WSU that is broadly adapted across environments, statistically tying even the best common soft white wheat in every precipitation zone for yield. Test weight is good to very good across zones. It is 3-5 inches taller and 2-3 days later than UI Magic CL+. Piranha CL+ has very good winter survival, second only to OR2x2 and Sockeye CL+. It is only slightly better than UI Magic CL+ for stripe rust resistance, rated as only moderately susceptible. Strawbreaker foot rot is rated intermediate and end-use quality is desirable. It is well-positioned to replace acres of UI Magic CL+, Curiosity CL+, and Mela CL+, except in areas where snow mold is a major concern and Mela CL+ and Curiosity CL+ will outperform Piranha CL+. Seed will start being available Fall 2022 (very limited amounts in Fall 2021).
